Welcome to our winter coaching plan for Laser/ILCA. There are still some exciting events to come this year with frostbites in November and our laying up supper where we will present some of the league prizes and awards.
Our coaching has a number of focus areas.
- New to the laser
- Ongoing development of sailors for local league racing
- Hi-performance coaching for national and international events
We will endeavour to run two days of coaching per week in October. Wednesday afternoons and Saturday mornings with the coaching focus dependent on sailor signups.
The laser is a physically demanding boat and for high performance, we also offer a group strength and conditioning class in F45 in the Elysian building in Cork on Tuesdays at 7:30pm.
We will continue with Saturday coaching in November with frostbite racing on Sundays.
Our primary coaches are Jonathan O’Shaughnessy and Michael Crosbie, both Irish Youth national champions. Both also sailed in the ISA Youths academy program and are still active ILCA sailors, placing third in the 2023 Senior National championships in ILCA 7 and ILCA 6 respectively. We will also have a number of other well qualified coaches for clinics, backup and getting sailors started in the laser.
To enable an optimum program to be run for the sailors, we will also run goal setting sessions with the sailors and coaches to help design custom coaching plans for this winter. The first goal setting sessions will be on Sat, Sept 30th.
There are many exciting events in 2024 to think about, target and prepare for through the winter.
- March 30/31 : Munster championships, Baltimore
- Easter: Irish Youth Nationals at Royal Cork.
- May/June/July/Aug – local league racing
- End of July: European Youth ILCA 6 championships- Ballyholme
- Other European events – on eurilca.org
- ILCA summer sprint series – June – Sept.
- ILCA Connaught/Leinster/Ulster/
Nationals ( details tba on ilcaireland.com) - Masters Events
In particular, the European ILCA 6 Youths championship in Ballyholme is a very exciting opportunity in 2024 for our sailors. The location is familiar to many, has accommodation available and boats are easily transported. The normal costs involved to travel to a european or world event are significant and incorporate cost of charter boats etc. Some world events are in Brazil, Argentina in 2024 and so Ballyholme presents a great opportunity to experience a large international event.
