Wave Regatta pic 2

Success for Royal Cork Keelboats

Last weekend, the WAVE Regatta was held in Howth Yacht Club. The RCYC was well represented by Craig O’Neill’s J24, “Legal Alien”, the Jones family’s “Jellybaby” and James Dwyer’s ½ tonner “Swuzzlebubble”.

Congratulations to James Dwyer and his crew for bringing it home in Class 2 IRC, also winning the Lambay race and finishing 2nd in Class 2 Echo. Well done, what a fantastic result!

Congratulations also to the Jones family, who finished a very respectable 4th in Class 0 and to Craig O’Neill who put in some great results over the three days!

The Matthews of Cork Inishtearaght Race also took place last weekend. Again, our club was well represented by Paul Tingle’s “Alpaca” and Noel Coleman’s “Blue Oyster”.

Unfortunately, “Blue Oyster” retired from the race, however “Alpaca” went on to win in Echo and came 3rd place in IRC. Congratulation to the crew on a fantastic result!

Well done to all the RCYC keelboats who competed in these events over the weekend!

On the domestic front, the RCYC’s summer series continued last Thursday and Friday. Thankfully there was more breeze this week and once again, we had a brilliant turnout of 16 boats on Friday night!

On Thursday, IRC Spin was won by Michael McCann’s Etchells “Don’t Dilly Dally”, with Ria Lyden, “Ellida” recording a second bullet of the league by winning Echo Spin.

Another strong performance by Pat Vaughan on “Aramis” saw him win Echo White Sail and the Jenkins family brought home the prize by winning IRC White Sail on “Morning After”.

We had a lovely SW breeze to start the race on Friday night, and with 16 boats competing we were treated to a great night’s racing. Clive Doherty came home in 3rd place on “Phaeton”, with Frank Caul & John Molloy’s “Prince of Tides” coming in 2nd. The night was won by Kieran Collins, who, sailing single handed, won the race on his new boat “So”. Well done Kieran!

This week is the last week of the May league and it’s pretty close across all divisions! Let’s get as many boats as possible on the water on Thursday and Friday! Prizegiving for the league will be held after racing, both nights in the club bar.

As always, thanks to Amy, Ann and all the staff, to our Race Officers, Ronan Downing, Anthony O’Leary and Denis Murphy and to Sean Hanly and Michael McCann for doing the results.
