Bono and his brother, Norman Hewson, made a surprise visit to Ireland’s Green Dragon Racing Team in advance of the start of the race on Saturday, October 11th.
The race will sail to Captetown, Kochi, Singapore, Qingdao, Rio de Janeiro and Boston before arriving in Galway on May 23rd May, 2009 for a two week festival. The boats and their crews will have endured eight months at sea and over 35,000 nautical miles in temperatures ranging from minus 5 to plus 50 degrees celsius in a cramped carbon fibre boat. The sailors will have put themselves under the same level of mental and physical duress as a soldier on the front line of a war zone – at times 2,500 miles from the nearest landfall, contending with mountainous seas, 70 knot winds, and the constant pounding of the waves.
Well known in Royal Cork Yacht Club is the Dutch entry Delta Lloyd, owned and skippered by Ger O’Rourke. Ger’s 19 year old daughter Dee, is taking a year off from her studies at Cork Institute of Technology to act as Logistics and Administration Manager for Delta Lloyd campaign being the youngest person with one of the biggest jobs. Shore Operations Manager for the campaign is Jeff Condell, another sailor well known in the club. We wish both campaigns well in their endeavours.
