Volvo Cork Week Amendments Make For Thrilling Schedule

Volvo Cork Week 2020 organisers have posted a number of amendments to the Notices of Race for both the ICRA Nationals and the IRC Europeans. The changes to the structure of the event have been made following feedback from competing sailors and the result is a simplified and more inclusive schedule of racing. In simple terms, the amendments are as follows-

  • Volvo Cork Week competitors may now opt to enter either the ICRA Nationals, the IRC Europeans or both events
  • Both fleets will race together throughout the week on inshore courses with the exception of Wednesday
  • On Wednesday the ICRA fleet will join the other Volvo Cork Week fleets for a Harbour Race and will compete for the prestigious Hugh Coveney Trophy. While this race won’t count towards the ICRA nationals, it will count towards the overall Volvo Cork Week Boat Of The Week
  • On Wednesday the IRC European fleet will do a Long Coastal Race as part of their championship which will also count towards Volvo Cork Week Boat Of The Week
  • The IRC European fleet will see OSR Cat 3 + prescriptions apply for measurement & inspection while liferafts are no longer required
  • The other events within Volvo Cork Week such as the Beaufort Cup, the 1720 Europeans and the Dragon South Coasts are unaffected by these amendments

Event organisers are confident the adjusted schedule will result in exceptional racing for all and are particularly looking forward to Wednesday’s harbour race which will see close to 250 boats race in close quarters through the confines of the magnificent harbour.

Admiral of the Royal Cork Yacht Club, Colin Morehead, commented: “The biennial Cork Week regatta has seen many friendships and memories created since it was first held in 1978. I would encourage everyone to return to Cork Harbour next year and join us in celebrating Where It All Began by participating in Volvo Cork Week 2020 and help restore its status as Europe’s largest fun regatta.”
