League Report

Last week saw the completion of the Union Chandlery May League at RCYC. With pleasant sailing conditions throughout the month the small numbers of boats grew during as the month went on.

In Class 1, Peter and Bill Crowley on Hitime dominated and took 1st in IRC ahead of Mike McCarthy’s Checkmate and Simon Coveney’s Wavetrain in 3rd. In ECHO It was Martin Darrer’s Singing the Blues which took first ahead of Wavetrain and Checkmate.

Class 2 saw some very tight racing with the Desmond, Deasy, Ivers consortium on Bad Company taking 1st place in IRC just ahead of Denis Coleman’s Corby 25 Thunderbird. The Donery / Murphy combo on No Gnomes took 3rd. In ECHO Michael and Siobhan O’Donovan’s Swift knocked Bad Company off the leaders place with Ian Hickey on Cavatina taking third.

The change in SCORA banding saw Class 3 contested by 5 boats over the month. In IRC Kiearn Collin’s Tambourine held off a stiff challenge from Mike Allen on Vlad the Impala with the Durcan, Archer, Boland consortium on La Belle Vie taking third. After a long absence from the scene it was a nice way to start her 2008 season. In ECHO the leaders were reversed with Vlad taking honours ahead of Tambourine and La Belle Vie.
The Thursday White Sail class was contested by Pat Vaughan’s Aramis and Peter Webster on Thistle. Having only two boats compete produced some bouncing around of the progressive handicap but in the end it was Aramis who took first place. It is hoped that more boats will join the fleets for the forthcoming Cronin’s Bar June League.
