Uí Loingsigh of Glanmire shorthanded wine race was a short, snappy and extremely enjoyable race in 12 knots of westerly breeze that saw plenty of excitement as it gave the competitors two spinnaker runs in a six leg race.
Ria Lyden who has been going very well of late in Ellida, sailed a very consistent race beating many of the all out racing machines over the water taking first in the all in IRC with Jelly Baby second and Gloves Off third. However, in All in ECHO Marine Correspondent Tom MacSweeney in Seascapes II, helmed by son Cormac, pushed Ellida into second place by a mere eleven seconds with Frank Doyle’s Endgame a further 41 seconds adrift in third place.
At the start of the race Billy Duane, singlehandedly sailing Expression, gybed onto port getting a better breeze and also avoiding the worst of the tide for the run to Corkbeg. This tactic was enough to give him a win in both IRC and ECHO Whitesail. The remaining sixteen boats opted to sail the sraight line to Corkbeg and were led off the line by Marita Buwalda sailing Outrigger, the smallest boat in the fleet and with husband Jimmy Nyhan crewing. This helped to give them the win in IRC 3.
The experienced Desmond/Ivers/Deasy team on Bad Company won in both IRC and ECHO in Class 2 with Vinny O’Shea’s Yanks & Ffrancs in second place and a previous winner of the Wine Race Kieran and Liz O’Brien’s Magnet in third position.
After racing Tadhg and Michael Lynch presented the magnificent prizes of vintage wines to the skippers and crews making for a very enjoyable conclusion to the highly successful Tuesday night race.
Tadhg’s talk on the various answers to the wine quiz was most informative and certainly would encourage anyone to visit their Off Licence at Glanmire for any queries they have on fine wines.Images HERE
