Topper Munster Championship

The colourful sight of 30 Toppers in the harbour this weekend was down to the fact that the Royal Cork was once again hosting a Topper event and now has a fledgling fleet of 5 boats amongst the club juniors.

Families travelled from the North, Dublin and Wexford to what proved to be a very challenging weekend on the water. Saturday started off very benign with just enough wind to achieve one race after several hours out on the water. Race Officer Tom Crosbie, however made the correct call to wait and see, and sure enough at 16.30hrs the breeze came in from the south and 2 more races were had.

It was the complete opposite on Sunday morning with a steady 18 knots with gusts of 25. The sailors had 2 excellent races and very much enjoyed the fast reaches. The OD wisely brought the fleet in just before a 35kn squall blew up and all were happy with the 5 race series.

Anna McNulty from Carlingford Lough Sailing Club won the event and also picked up the prize for 1st lady. Adam D’Arcy was the best local sailor finishing 5th overall and 2nd in the U17’s. Strong performances also from our own Ronan Walsh 2nd in U14’s and also Eoghan O’Regan, Lucy Donworth, Molly Murphy, Harry Durcan and James McCann. We look forward to seeing much more Topper activity in the club next season.
