Today marked a milestone in Radio and Television marine reporting with the retirement of Tom MacSweeney from the RTE Newsroom as their marine correspondent when, as he himself put it, he had reached the barrier bridge. He has no intention of taking it easy and will continue to be actively involved in matters marine. He was the first Regional Correspondent for RTE and also the first Marine Correspondent. He will be flying his flag from the mast as he will be continuing for the moment with his well known and loved radio programme “Seascapes”.
Royal Cork members will be well aware of Tom’s loyalty to the club in obtaining wide television coverage for major events including numerous Cork Weeks. As a club member and yachtsman himself he knew what to look for and the right questions to ask during interviews. He always championed the cause of sailing and, as this scribe can attest, was never lacking in attending and airing his views at meetings of the Nautical Scribes. No doubt we will still be able to enjoy his marine contributions to various magazines and newspapers. Hopefully he will have a little more time to enjoy sailing with his wife Kathleen in his Sigma 33 “Seascapes”.
