Royal Cork YC Keelboat Racing Update – May 2022

The fine weather has brought the racing fleet out a little earlier than normal with racing numbers improving each week.

The April Whitesail league finished last Saturday with a win for Magnet. Magnet wins the league after a countback with Ellida. Well done all and thank you to the RO Kevin Lane and his team.

The seven boat Royal Cork fleet competing in the Axiom Spring Series in Kinsale over April also finished up last Saturday. Again lovely sailing conditions allowed a full ‘round the cans’ race to be completed. Artful Dodger (O Regan family) came from behind to win the final race and the series overall. Artful Dodger, JellyBaby (Jones family) and Reavra Too all finished on 8 points with Artful winning after a countback. Well done to Alpaca on winning ECHO Class1, Northstar (Young family) on winning Class2 ahead of second placed Anchor Challenge (Conor Phelan) and Sweet Dreams (Batt O Leary) winning Whitesail1. A great outing for the Royal Cork boats that travelled over in early April. Well done Kinsale on a great series.

Finishing off a very busy weekend of club keelboat sailing we had the first race in the ‘Offshore Series’ on Monday last. Eight boats raced in very light airs in glorious sunshine around the outer harbour marks. Northstar (2 crew up) won the race on handicap with Alpaca second and JellyBaby third (first over the line).

The club Adult Training programme started last Tuesday evening (3rd May). There is a mix of dinghies and keelboats being used by the competent instructors. A great opportunity for our Adult members that want to learn how to sail.

The first Summer leagues start this Thursday (Spinnaker and Whitesail) and Friday (Whitesail) evening. The usual fare, First Gun on both nights at 1855hrs and start within the Grassy Walk/Cage buoy area. If you are planning to eat in the Club after racing please book using the  link for this evening (Thursday 5th May) and contact the office to book Friday night.

Don’t forget to Enter and Declare (incl 2022 IRC and ECHO Certs) as per previous correspondence. See the Keelboats Notice Board on the club website for all information required. If you don’t enter you won’t get a result.

Make sure you have the current club course card (available on line and at club bar).

See you on the water.
