Congratulations to the Royal Cork Optimist team of Peter McCann, Cian Byrne and Brendan Lyden who won the Vice-Presidents trophy at Howth Yacht Club last Friday. This was an inter-club event with 8 teams in total from all over the country. The team won all of their races culminating in an emphatic 1-2-3 win in the final.
The runners-up also had Royal Cork members on their team – Katherine Geoghegan (Dungarvan SC/ RCYC) and Daire Cournane (Kinsale YC / RCYC) – who were drafted in at the last minute along with Craig Campbell of Royal North of Ireland Yacht Club when one of the original teams dropped out.The victorious team will be joined by Philip Brownlow when representing the club at the French Nationals in Loctudy in Brittany in two weeks time.
The Oppie Leinsters on Saturday/Sunday in the same venue proved a frustrating experience with racing abandoned after the first race on the Saturday due to fog. The fog persisted through to Sunday and eventually the entire event was cancelled and it is expected that it will be rescheduled for the same venue in early September.
