Royal Cork triumph in Oppie Leinsters

Seafra Guilfoyle and Peter McCann again did the double in the final Optimist regional event of 2009. Guilfoyle and McCann, recently crowned Senior and Junior National Champions respectively, both added Leinster Champion to their long lists of titles and with Jamie Tingle winning the Junior Silver event it turned out to be another very successful raid by the club sailors.

One hundred and eighty five boats turned out for the event in Howth with racing just to the north of Irelands Eye in exhilarating conditions. The excellent race management saw a full programme of six races per division being completed despite the imminent gale being warned of for Sunday afternoon.

In the racing the senior event was particularly tightly fought between Guilfoyle and his club mate Patrick Crosbie who was ahead by just a point going into the final race. A black flag for Crosbie saw him slip to third overall behind Colm O’Regan (KYC). Also in the top 10 and with a race win apiece were John Durcan and Phillip Brownlow – Full senior results here

In the junior event McCann was totally dominant with five race wins. Cian Byrne was second junior and Eoin Lyden achieved an incredible 4th a fantastic achievement for Lyden in the conditions. Daire Cournane was 7th, Jamie Tingle 13th (1st Silver Fleet), Graham Smith 14th, and Louise Shanahan 25th (5th Silver) – Full junior results here

The regatta fleet had a massive 70 boats entered with racing and training held just outside the harbour. – Regatta fleet results here
