Royal Cork Keelboat May League concludes in glorious sunshine!

Last week saw the conclusion of the RCYC Summer Series May league.

Thursday night was the freshest night of the series, with gusts of up to 26 knots. 11 boats took to the start in what was a fantastic race, thanks to our RO, Anthony O’Leary. On the night Michael McCann in “Don’t Dilly Dally” won both Spin IRC and Echo. Congrats to Mike and his crew! The Admiral brought home IRC White Sail on “Nieulargo” and Paul O’Shea’s Sun Odyssey “Elegance” won White Sail Echo. Well done to all our winners!

Friday night felt a bit more like summer with blue skies and 9-10 knots. The Collins family came home in 3rd place in their Bavaria, “Sepideh”, with Craig O’Neill’s “Legal Alien” coming 2nd.  On the night, the Foster family’s “Clodagh” took 1st place, well done to Caoimhe and her crew! Thanks to our RO, Pat Tanner, for giving us a great course.

We also held the overall prizegiving for the May League on both nights. For Thursday nights, Spin IRC was won by Fiona Young in “North Star” with Ellida and Magnet coming 2nd and 3rd respectively. Spin Echo was won by Ria Lyden in “Ellida” with “North Star” and Sean Hanley’s “Luas” taking 2nd and 3rd.

In the White Sail division, Pat Vaughan was the big winner on “Aramis”, winning both IRC and Echo with “Morning After”, the Club 1720 and “Elegance” taking 2nd and 3rd in each.

Friday nights saw the largest turnout in over 10 years, in all, 27 boats competed in the league! This is a fantastic show for our club and our members. Overall, the winner was Louise O’Keeffe in “Labous Gwen” with Clodagh O’Donovan on “Roaring 40’s” in 2nd and the Foster family’s “Clodagh” in 3rd place.

Well done to all our competitors for making this league such a success. Let’s keep the momentum going and have more boats on the water for the June/July league, starting this Thursday and Friday night.

The Cork Harbour combined league also kicks off next Friday and will run for the 4 Fridays in June. This event is open to WS and SPIN but we will run our Friday night June/July IHS league alongside. The event is kindly sponsored by Johanna Murphy and sons, Estate Agents and there will be prizegiving on the final night, 28th June in Cobh.

As always, thanks to Heineken and CH Marine for supporting our prizes, Ann, Amy and all the staff, our RO’s, Sean and Mike for doing results, Bob for his photos and to the members for making the league a success!
