RACE SIX AT QINGDAO DROPS 470 TO 11TH

Race Six has now finished and the lottery has taken place again.  Owens and Lawton finished 25th and are now lying in 11th position overall.

As they have passed the half way stage they have had to discard their 25th finish and count back in their previous lowest score of 22. This leaves them on 56 points going into Race Seven four races ahead of the Medal Race in which only the top ten finishers of the series will compete. The current leader is Australia on 17 pts, France 2nd on 24 pts and Britain 3rd on 25 pts.  Owens and Lawton are currently in a group of four boats on points ranging from 52 to 58.  They have a lay day to-morrow (14th) so we will have to wait until Friday and Saturday for Races Seven to Ten.  The Medal Race for this class is scheduled for Monday, August 18th.

In the Laser Radial Class, at the time of writing, Race Three has been sailed and Race Four has been postponed.  In Race Three Ciara Peelo finished in 15th position and currently lies 23rd overall after three races.

In the Finn Class, also at the time of writing, Race Seven has been sailed and Race Eight has been postponed.  In Race Seven Tim Goodbody finished 22nd and this leaves him lying 22nd overall on 98 points.

To-morrow (14th) the Practice Race for the Star Class will be sailed and we will have our first opportunity to see the Star pairing of Peter O’Leary and Stephen Milne on the water during the Beijing Games 2008.  The excitement is mounting, our hopes are high, and all our thoughts and good wishes are with them for Friday’s Races One and Two of the series.  Here we have an interesting point:  The event website posts requests for information from competitors.  Here is one – QUESTION: Bearing in mind the recent issue regarding large amounts of weed on the field of play, please can the organisers permit the use of weed sticks by all competitors for this event only.  ANSWER: Boats in the Star Class may use a weed stick in accordance with the Class Rules.  Weed sticks are not permitted in other classes.  There is no exception to normal class rules!

A reminder!  Don’t forget to tune in to RTE Two tonight at 19.00hrs for Main Highlights for more sailing coverage with Prof O’Connell.

NOTE:  Racing in the Finn and Laser Radial Classes has been cancelled due to lack of wind. Races Eight in the Finn Class and Four in the Laser Radial Class have been re-scheduled for to-morrow (14th)
