One of the finest days of the year was picked by the
Optimist committee for the annual beach party at Ringabella. Great committees
are blessed with tremendous foresight, excellent planning and heaps of good
luck!

This outing was planned a few weeks ago when the prospects
of anything other than a continuous downpour seemed remote. However, the
weather gods were smiling and throughout the week the forecast was always
promising. Saturday dawned with a fairly thick sea-mist but the old seadogs in
assured us that it would burn off and all would be well. They were correct and
a cloudless sky greeted the Optimist sailors and their families for the trip to
the beach.
Thanks to all those who organised the food and drink for the
day. Claire Burke was the Chef de Mission and co-ordinated the purchase of the meat
from Durcans, drink and salads with assistance from Claire Crosbie, Jackie
Harrington, Nuala Lyden and Louise O’Keeffe. Claire managed all of this while
also catering for another huge group at Crosshaven Rugby Club for the visit of
Bruff for the Munster Senior Cup.
Thanks also to Damian Byrne, Ronan Lyden and Darren O’Keeffe
who, together with the author, cooked 100 burgers, 14 lbs of sausages and 40
pork chops to feed the starving masses!
One of the highlights of the day (besides the weather) was
the appearance of the catamaran fleet at the beach. They very kindly too many
of the sailors out for a sail to experience the difference between the speed of
two narrow hulls and a single bath shaped one!
Minister for Fun, Brian Trevor, organised the tug of war and
a number of swimming.
