The 2021 Optimist Ulster Championships took place at East Antrim Boat Club this past weekend. The Boat Club is close to the mouth of Larne Lough, just South of the remarkable Antrim Glens from where the Mull of Kintyre looks a straightforward sail.
RCYC was represented by 7 of the 57 competitors. Day 1 brought light breeze: characteristic of several events this year. Day 2 however provided good sailing conditions; allowing main fleet to complete 6 races and Regatta Fleet 7 races over the two-day event.
We had two sailors in Senior Fleet: Oisin Pierse came 3rd overall with Isha Duggan finishing 5th (and 1st girl). In Junior fleet Matt Mapplebeck (RCYC/KYC) came 7th (and 3rd Silver), Rian O’Neill finished 11th, Corey Browne (in his first main fleet event) finished 14th and Billy Mallin (RCYC/KYC) 22nd. In Regatta, Laylah Browne came 5th in the 15 strong fleet.
Well done to all of you, and thank you to EABC, IODAI, and the RCYC parents.
On Saturday 18th, the RCYC Optimist September Burns League continued, in light breeze, with 18 sailors taking part. The League concludes this Saturday.
