Optimist Ulster Championship 2026
Optimist Ulsters 26, a successful return to Strangford Lough for RCYC

Our dedicated RCYC optimist sailors hit the road in style last weekend, travelling north to the beautiful Strangford Lough Yacht Club in Co. Down. After a few years away, it was fantastic to return and SLYC certainly rolled out the red carpet. Vice-Commodore John Gilmor summed it up perfectly, saying how delighted they were to welcome 130 Optimist sailors from across the country, including over 20 from RCYC alone.
And our sailors didn’t just show up — they showed off, delivering brilliant performances across Senior Fleet – Dylan O’Sullivan 3rd and Junior Fleet – Jack Ryan 2nd, missing the win by just one point! to the local SLYC rising star Oliver Gunderson.
Coaching Crew – The Heart of the Weekend
A huge shout‑out to our fantastic coaching team, Oisín Pierse and Rory Whyte, who guided the sailors through tricky tidal conditions around the islands of Strangford Lough. Their energy, support and sharp on‑the‑water calls kept spirits high and helped build that special Team RCYC buzz we’re so proud of.
Meanwhile, Daisy Walsh and Fionn Hayes were busy nurturing the next generation back at home in the Club supporting no less than 12 of our Tin/Copper fleet sailors, including new joiners Lynn Nolan, Dionne Lester, Clodagh O’Driscoll and Molly O’Donovan.
A fantastic weekend all round and the future is looking bright!
