The overall plan for Club Oppies between here and the start of the summer has been issued. For the next 6 weeks we will be running two squads as follows – the Trials Squad and the Junior Squad. After that we will start the beginner training. There is information about league racing, parents rota, an information evening and the trials.
Trials Squad Coaching
The Trials Squad will be all Royal Cork sailors who are taking part in the IODAI trials. This squad will be accompanied by George Kennefick and Stefano Cherin to both trial events and full coaching program has been sent to the squad.
Junior Squad Coaching
The Junior Squad will be all other main fleet sailors who have been partaking in the winter coaching to date and will be led by Donagh Good and Paul Tingle and coordinated by Orla Palliser. The plan for this squad is that they work together every Sunday from March 15th and attend a 2 day clinic with Stefano on April 8th/9th (the first week of the Easter Holidays). The Junior Squad will have the option of attending the ISA pathway championship in Schull which is held over 2 days the following week and will be accompanied by a coach should enough sailors elect to attend.
Beginner Training
Starting April 24 on Saturday mornings we will have beginner training led by Darren O’Keefe and Brian Trevor and assisted by John Cudmore. Please contact the club if you need more information.
Club Racing
Club racing will begin on April 4th and will be every Saturday at 2.30. It is our intention that racing continues every Saturday without fail even when there are big away events, the only exception to this will be the weekend of the Trials at Royal Cork on Saturday 18th April due to pressure on resources. Tuesday evening racing will commence on June 2nd.
Parents Rota
We will be organizing a Rota for rescue, beach master and race officer duties and this will be coordinated by Orla Palliser over the coming weeks. This year we are going to combine forces with the Feva Class and run one Rota with the Fevas who will sail with us on the same race course (with separate longer courses). The new Feva Class Captain is Ronan Lyden. Regarding the Rota we do need the full assistance and cooperation of all parents as the racing can be a massive undertaking otherwise for the small few. Please let Orla know (throug the club office if necessary) which of the following duties you would be comfortable to be rostered for: Race Officer, RIB driver, RIB helper, Beach Master.
Optimist Briefing Night
We will be organizing a briefing night for new Parents in April – in the meantime if anyone has any queries about how the whole Oppie circuit works nationally have a look at the following link http://www.iodai.com/live/612.html
Trials Volunteers
Other stuff – we are hosting the first leg of the trials over the weekend of 17th-19th April and Mark Whitaker is our club coordinator. Please make your offers of help to Mark (through the club office) which would be very much appreciated.
