Optimist Europeans Report – Day 5

The forecast was good, the wind was good in the morning and we got 3 superb races in 15kts of wind. The waves were big and surfing downwind was surely the highlight of each of the races.

The group started well with Amy and Fiona taking 15th and 16th respectively. Patrick gave a good fight to take 20th in his race. Seafra fought well to take 32nd.

But it was to be the highlight of our day… Seafra capsized on the second race while racing another solid race inside the twenties ending his challenge as he could only recover to 61st. Colm recovered from a dreadful first beat into 24th but the rest of the group struggled to catch the various oscillations in the wind.

Seafra did not give up and took 30th in the last race. Fiona was definitely struggling but fought to the end taking a valuable 26th.

Overall our leaders Fiona and Seafra paid for their average day by dropping places overall but are still in the hunt for a good final placing. Colm caught up and is now close to a top half finish. Amy maintained her position and is still in the game for a top 50 finish. The sailors are in good form and are now looking towards the final day of the championships with hope, as the second discard should be able to kick in… As I am flying to France tomorrow morning to join the CIE team, James O Callaghan will take over on the water after my final briefing.
