Optimist Activity For Month of May

Darren O Keeffe and his team continue to run the optimist beginner sailing programme each Saturday morning throughout the month of May. This is an introduction to the optimist dinghy for the very young sailor and commences @ 11am and finishing @ 1pm. It is open to all children who are members or fall into family membership category of the club. Again Linda O Keeffe is also available should any new parents have queries or questions that need answering.


This May bank holiday weekend will see fifteen of the clubs more advanced sailors taking part in the second leg of the Irish optimist trials in DunLaoghaire and we wish them all luck in competing for a place on a national optimist team.

Saturday league racing continues each afternoon with first gun at 2.30. For those parents that are available and eligible to do so, please sign up to the duty roster in order to ensure ample cover is in place to allow racing and encouragement of the younger sailors to be conducted effectively.Any queries , please contact Billy Duane.

Galway bay sailing club will be home for the first regional event of the year , playing host to the connachts which will be run over the weekend of the 14th & 15th of May. Over 20 optimist sailors from the club are expected to travel and are looking forward to sailing off the west coast . This event will be closely followed by the ‘Lenisters’  which are being hosted by the National yacht club over the weekend of the 28th & 29th May.

The current coaching programme finished on Easter Sunday last having been run over the months of March and April without losing one day due to adverse weather conditions. June will see the start of a new programme and more details will follow.

Finally ,on Sunday the 22nd May , there are plans to organise an outing for the optimist kids on the ISA J80 fleet (weather permitting) which are available to the club for a number of weeks ….more details to follow .
