The first race of the New York Yacht Club Invitational Cup series was held to-day (Wed). Wind was north easterly 13 to 16 kts with big seas.
Royal Canadian Yacht Club got away with a big lead and when they arrived at the first leeward gate they were followed by a group of four which included Royal Cork. With a wind shift the Race Committee were forced to move the weather mark. Some boats suffered gear failure but by the finish of the race Canada pipped New York to cross the finish line with our Royal Cork Team third. The other Irish team from the Royal St. George Yacht Club finished in 7th position.
Given the gear failure and the weather conditions almost up to the limit of 22 kts, the race Committee decided to cancel all further racing for the day. The Royal Cork Team are listed as Anthony O’Leary, Nicholas O’Leary, Tom Durcan, Clive O’Shea, Clayton and David Love, Brian Lennon and Ritchie Watkins.
Racing continues through to Saturday.
