Sunday the 25th of September was the 2016 RCYC Naval Race sponsored by Marshall Marine Textiles. The Race Officer set a very challenging course for the fleet of 17 boats in a strong 15 – 20 knot WSW breeze. The course brought the fleet to Cage followed by No3, W2, Corkbeg, Cage, EF4, No18, No15, No 20 and finish at No15. Four boats retired after a very strong squall passed over the fleet while rounding Cage for the second time, I think the close proximity of home shelter was to tempting for the four boats. The squall soon passed and the fleet made the long beat up passed Cobh to finish between the VS Tower of the Naval Base and No15 Channel Mark. All crews were then welcomed into the Naval Base for some much need food and Drinks, a beautiful curry and rice was on the menu for just €5 pp and heavily subsidised Beverages made a perfect finish to a perfect day.. Big Congratulations to Kieran & Liz O Brien and their crew on Magnet for winner the 2016 Naval Race and getting their hands on the Beautiful Bullet trophy and a big thanks to the Naval Base for their hospitality for the day, as always the made us feel very welcome.
