Liam Duggan Wins Topper Winter Champs

Liam Duggan won the Astra Construction Topper Winter championships at Royal Cork Yacht Club last weekend. The 2-day event was held in anything but Winter temperatures, the heatwave meant that temperatures were in the mid-twenties which resulted in a strong sea breeze filling the sails of the 75 sailors as they races around Cork Harbour. The 5-day Topper World championships of 300 dinghies were due to be held at the club this week but due to the covid restrictions, that was cancelled, and the substitute Winter championships were held instead.
Royal Cork’s Liam Duggan won the overall prize, also winning the Youth Male category, with Rian Collins second overall, and winner of the Male Junior category with third place going to Daniel Palmer of Ballyholme Co. Down. First Youth girl was won by Julie O’Neill, with Isabelle Passberger(RCYC/WHSC) and Sarah Clooney(RCYC/WHSC) taking 2nd and 3rd respectively. Rian O’Neill took home the honours in the 4.2 fleet. In the Male Youth category Max Tolan(RCYC) and Max Passberger(RCYC/WHSC) took 2nd & 3rd respectively. Overall, it was a great performance by the Royal Cork sailors, with 28 sailors from the club taking part. Many have already set their sights now on the Irish National Championships in August at Carrickfergus Co. Antrim.

Royal Cork Yacht Club would like to thank Astra Construction for their generous sponsorship of the event.
