Multihull Report


The Irish Multihull travelling season drew to a close the weekend Sept 13th /14th at the Royal Cork Yacht Club, 43 boats have participated in the series from May to September. The Ballyholme Yacht Club Team were rewarded justly for their participation taking home the most silverware. The Prestigious IMA Travellers Trophy award went to Adrian and Mike Allen on the Hurricane 5.9, on a high point scoring system over the 5 Regional events, they topped the league. The Team Travellers Trophy also went North to Ballyholme YC, the points for this trophy were based on the top three results from each club at each event.  Saturday the National Championship racing commenced in a steady 12 knots southerly breeze, which remained constant for the day and 4 races were completed before the boats returned to the club for a well deserved class dinner and drinks. Day 2 conditions were slightly less fresh and flat water inside the harbour provide close racing in all the fleets.Peter Crowley the appointed National Race Officer was ably assisted by his team from RCYC, Maritta Buwalda, Miriam Mc Mahon, Mark Ring & Nathan Kirwan & Dave Kearney.A selection UK Spitfires also travelled for the weekends racing in Cork, they also hope to be making a return journey in 2009, when Ireland will host the European Championships for the class for the second time. Overall Fleet Results:1st Open Nationals Andrew Gallagher & Darrach Mc Dermott   – RCYC & GBSC A-Class1st Rob Doyle – RCYC2nd Brendan Fafiani   – RCYC3rd Neil Mangan              – RCYC Formula 18 / Hobie Tiger1st Andrew Gallagher & Darrach Mc Dermott – RCYC / GBSC2nd Jim Sheeran & Dave Mc Gowan              – RCYC3rd Aubyn Thompson & Robert Vellic                  – Blessington SC Hurricane 5.91st Adrian Allen & Mike Allen                              Ballyholme YC2nd Elaine Taylor & David Taylor                           Ballyholme YC3rd Richard Swanston & Cath Gunning                        Ballyholme YC Spitfire1st Henry White & Ed Redfearn                           Weston SC2nd Alex farr & Marcelle Newbold                                    Weston SC3rd AJ Lawerence & Carl Smith                                 Blessington SC   The International racing calendar isn’t complete yet, with a selection of the Irish fleet from Ballyholme and Swords in the Hurricane 5.9’s and the Spitfires & single handed Shadow from Blessington all packed on trailers for the weekend 27 – 28 September in Brightlingsea Sailing.Brightlingsea is the venue for the UK Spitfire Nationals and a retirement party for a long standing catamaran sailor Reg White ex Olympic Tornado medallist.
