Over 30 sailors and families travelled to Dromineer, Co Tipperary last week to compete at the Irish Laser Nationals. The event was hosted by Lough Derg Yacht Club and our club sailors were spread across all fleets and age categories.
The conditions varied from no wind to gusting 30 knots over the four days. Race Officer Con Murphy managed to get nine races completed.
In the 4.7 Fleet we had 15 sailors who secured many outstanding race results. At the end of the event we had five of our sailors in the top ten – Atlee Kohl (2nd), Maeve Leonard (4th), Rob Keal (5th), Cathal O’Regan (6th) and Jonathan O’Shaughnessy (10th).
The radial fleet had the largest number of competitors – 50 in total. Again our sailors performed well with four in the top ten on Sunday evening. Micheal O’Suilleabhain (3rd), Chris Bateman (4th), Michael Carroll (6th) and Tom Keal (7th).
In the standard fleet we were represented by Nick Walsh, Luke McGrath and Ed Rice.
A special thank you to Rebecca O’Shaughnessy who ran a number of supervised sailing sessions in the lead up to the event and supported on the water once racing commenced. Well done to all our sailors.
