Welcome to the ILCA Summer Sprint Series 2023. After a hugely successful tri-series event in 2022, this year, it has expanded to five locations with a five race sprint regatta to be held at each of the clubs from June to-September. What a better way to see some of Corks finest sailing harbours in fun, but competitive events.

Glandore Sprint

We had a super start to the series in Glandore Harbour in June, then Kinsale in July and really looking forward to round three in Bantry. Remember, your best two qualifier events will be added to the finale event score to make up the triseries score overall. There will be a barbeque after sailing on Sunday.

Many thanks to GHSC for the wonderful days racing in R1.

Kinsale YC Sprint

Another fantastic days sailing was held on July 23rd with plenty of wind and no rain. There were five ILCA 7s growing that new category in the series, six ILCA 4s  and twenty boats in ILCA 6 with a very strong field.  The visitors had use of the commercial pier to park cars and trailers and the logistics all worked out very well. The race course was inside the harbour with a finish just underneath the majestic Charlesfort. Jonathan O’Shaughnessy dominated the ILCA 7 category again. Michael Crosbie powered through the field including a dramatic win in the final sprint having received an individual recall at the start where he had to duck back over line starting behind the fleet. Eolann Miles continued his winning ways staying just ahead of Liam Duggan on the day to make it two wins from the first two qualifying events. Huge thanks to Kinsale Yacht club and John O’Sullivan for organizing a great day out. There was a super bbq in the club before prizegiving.

Winners:

Jonathan O’Shaughnessy (ILCA7);   Michael Crosbie (ILCA 6);     Eolann Miles (ILCA 4)

Bantry Bay Sailing Club Sprint

The sun appeared again for a day in Bantry and a full card of races was completed with twenty five boats in attendance. Tim McCarthy as RO had a difficult day with the wind flicking 90 deg regularly, but he was able to keep to his course for the first four races. Thanks to to commodore, Kathryn and her team, there was a very enjoyable bbq in the club after racing. The latest scores are showing a tightening group of sailors in ILCA 4 and 6 which should make for an exciting final day’s racing. However there is still one more qualifying event for sailors to improve their scores heading into the finale. Inniscarra Sailing & Kayaking Club is up next on Sept 3rd.

Iniscarra Sailing and Kayaking Club Sprint

Unfortunately the wind didn’t play ball with the sprint event in Iniscarra and arrived after the boats were put away for the day. However, a great day out on the lake with the bbq and plenty of swimming to keep the visitors occupied.

Royal Cork Yacht Club Sprint Series Finale

The finale event is schedule at Royal Cork Yacht Club on the coming Sunday Sept 17th. The series prizes will be awarded on basis of results from two qualifying regattas and the finale event which has a 125% weighting at Royal Cork.

This is an open event and you may enter it as a single event outside of the series.
