Good Performance for Irish Optimist Team at Europeans

Two hundred and twenty five competitors sailed twelve races in this years Optimist Europeans over six days in Tavira, Portugal. The event concluded last Saturday and the championship lived up to its reputation as being a highly competitive event.

The Irish team comprised of seven of Irelands most competitive sailors (four of whom are members of the Royal Cork, namely; Harry Whitaker , Jil McGinley , Eoin Lyden and Peter McCann).

All of the Royal Cork sailors had a top ten finish in a race over the series with Peter McCann (pictured above) matching last years performance and finishing 7th overall (5th European) amongst the one hundred and thirty boys that competed. Next best of the boys from the Royal Cork was Eoin Lyden finishing 37th (31st European) while Harry Whitaker finished 76th.  Jil McGinley kept the flag flying in the girls fleet of ninety five and finished in 58th position overall.

The combined team team results means that Ireland have qualified for the European team championship later this year. Well done to our sailors and their support team for ensuring Ireland had a very strong and competitive representation at an event that consisted of the  best of the best.
