George Kenefick is the sixth in a row Royal Cork Winner of the ISA All Ireland Championships

George Kenefick of Royal Cork Yacht Club is the 2011 Waterways Ireland ISA Sailing Champion. Clubmate Mark Mansfield finished in second place and ISA Olympic Squad member Ryan Seaton took the bronze in a tightly sailed competition that finished today at Lough Derg Sailing Club. George along with his crew members Mel Collins and John Downey only finally came together on Wednesday night before the event that commenced yesterday. (Saturday)

In spite of still only being 23 years of age George has some remarkable achievements to his name in the world of competitive sailing and very recently was guest helm on Michael Kershaw’s ‘Chimp’ the recent overall winner of the 2011 Half Ton Cup Classic Series at the Royal Corinthian Yacht Club.  At the 2011 ICRA Nationals at the Royal Cork he helmed Tiger, the Faroux designed Quarter Tonner, to success in Class 3 and also won the Corinthian Division at the Quarter Ton Cup. He was also winner of the All Ireland Junior Sailing Championships in 2006.

Next challenge for George is the World Student Yachting Championships taking place at La Trinité sur Mer from October 21st to 28th 2011. He will lead the Cork Institute of Technology team in the championships where they have already chalked up a great record of success. They were runners up in 2007, won the championship in 2008, and placed fourth in 2009.  They have high hopes of making history by bringing the cup back to Ireland for the second time in 5 years.Indeed a worthy winner of the 2011 ISA Waterways all Ireland Championships and one who will travel to France on his next competitive outing with all our good wishes.
