Fun Orienteering Keel Boat Race

This year on Sunday the 6th of July, during the open day of Volvo Cork week, we will be running a very exciting and fun concept for all keel –boats. The Cork Harbour Orienteering race will be fun on a whole new level of adventure. Below you will find the general principle of the race and the rules that will govern the race. It will be a great way to get to know the harbour for the visiting boats and be in with a chance to pick up some prizes for your trouble, we look forward to seeing you on the start line.

Basic Principle:
A predetermined number of inflatable marks or set channel marks are used within the harbour by the PRO, each one with distinctive marking’s on it that can be easily read by all competitors, the GPS coordinates for each mark is recorded by the PRO. Then at the Briefing before the scheduled first gun the PRO gives all competitors a sheet with these coordinates and whether they are port or starboard marks. The competitors then have one hour to locate the general position for each mark using an IPhone, GPS, Chart Plotter, visually from Camden or paper chart and proceed to the start line. Once they have started they must match the GPS coordinates with the markings on each mark and once they have all marks done proceed to the finish line, fastest time after IRC handicap wins.  First, second and third prizes are McWilliam sail repair vouchers valid for Volvo Cork Week.

1. RULES

1.1 The regatta will be governed by the rules as defined in The Racing Rules of Sailing (RRS).

1.2 Mark can be found and rounded in any order.

2. START/BRIEFING
First Gun will be 12.55 on Sunday the 6th of July in the vicinity of C2 channel mark
Briefing will be held outside the club race office at 11.50 on Sunday the 6th of July

2. Strategy:
Once each team locates where they believe the mark to be on a chart before the race, it is then up to each team to decide which course is the most favourable with the current wind and tidal condition as the marks can be taken in whatever order each boat see fit.
