Financial Success on the Weather Front

On Saturday night last, Member’s from all sections of the Club packed the Dining Room to hear Evelyn Cusack of Met Eireann present a most entertaining talk on global and Irish weather forecasting.  Like all good scientists, Evelyn succeeded in making the complexity surrounding the dark art of weather prediction accessible and exciting to an audience full of skeptical sailors.

While many of us appreciate the sage and sometimes humorous weather lore of old salts, Evelyn illustrated how the advent of high speed computing and impact of satelite imaging is fast seeing off “alternative” methodologies such as moon dances and leaping frogs for guiding our ventures upon the oceans.

In addition, on the night Members contributed a total of € 1,400 on behalf of MS Ireland, which is Evelyn’s favourite charity. Well done to all involved!
