February midterm has been extremely busy once again for the RCYC dinghies. With alot of international coaches around, the sailors were put through their paces in the various class clinics.
The recently launched rcycdinghies instagram account proved a great hit, with everyone joining in to follow the weeks action. Continue to follow for some great sailing both at home and away at events throughout the season.
Oppies training off Roches Point
The Optimist Performance coaching program continued apace with our club coaches lead by Optimist Performance Coach Dennis Paaske.
29er hitting the waves in the channel
Lead coach Chris Bateman continued to provide 29er winter coaching during the midterm break, sailing conditions were excellent with boat speeds of 20knots registered during the sessions as evidenced in the picture above.
Toppers rounding the mark during training drills
The RCYC hosted 30 Toppers from all corners of the country over the mid term break including 14 club sailors. This was a fantastic opportunity for sailors to see how they fair over the rest of the fleet under the watchful eye of International Coach Steve Irish assisted by club coaches Francis Corkery, Sophie Crosbie, Darragh Collins, Hugh Lynch and Cillian Foster. The sailors were blessed with 5 days of incredible weather and made the most of time on the water with extensive briefings. The Topper Ireland event circuit kicks off over the St Patrick’s weekend for the Topper Winter Championships at LDYC where 15 club sailors will be competing in the work up to the Topper Worlds this summer in RCYC.
ILCAs milliseconds to the gun on sprint day
Fantastic spring weather brought out a strong fleet for the ILCA midterm clinic with a visiting coach from Vilamoura taking the helm. Andre Granadeiro has a strong sailing resume including most recently as a coach in Malta with Sailcoach. 18 sailors each day started with a jog led by Michael Crosbie to Camden. Jonathan O’Shaughnessy linked up with Michael and Andre to push the sailors through the clinic each day. After four tough days of the clinic, the first round of the defroster series was held on Saturday with another sixteen sailors racing. ILCA 4,6,7 competed.
Andre will continue to coach the fleet along with our own elite coaches up to Munster championships at Easter in Baltimore.
420s ready to launch at Kinsale
Four of the Mixed dinghy fleet 420 sailors headed to Kinsale YC for the Feb midterm training clinic followed by the 420 Munster Championships. It is great to see a revival of the class at the club, coming off the successful relaunch of the Mixed Dinghy fleet in 2022.
