Day Two ISA All Ireland Sailing Championships

The dawning of day two for the Championships provided some heart stopping moments for the organisers and race officials with the complete absence of wind.  However, National Race Officer for the Senior Fleet, David O’Brien, must have prayed harder than anybody else and by noon with some wind starting to fill from the south he  was able to get the senior fleet into a start sequence for race one of Flight Two. The wind having died again the race was shortened for the second beat  and the result was Paul McMahon, Laser Class 1st, Alan Carr, IDRA 14 Class 2nd and Laurence Hanley, Shannon OD Class 3rd.

Race Two in Flight Two  managed a south -south west breeze of 3-4 knots and the top two placings remained as for the first race with Paul McMahon and Alan Carr and third place filled this time by John Driscoll of the Squib Class.Race Three in Flight Two had Paul McMahon once again in first place with John Driscoll second and Neil Spain third.  It is now looking likely that Paul McMahon (Laser) and John Driscoll (Squib) are going through to Sunday’s Final Series of races as the top two competitors in Flight Two. Paul McMahon scored three straight wins in his qualification series today. John Driscoll counted a fifth and two second places to count 9 points overall, just one point clear of Neil Spain.

With the conclusion of Flight Two it was time for the competitors of Flight Three to take to their boats.  They had indeed been having an anxious wait owing to the weather and lack of wind that pertained during the earlier part of the day.  However, for Race One of Flight Three a breeze of 6 knots southwesterly had appeared and it was Tim Corcoran who took the win, followed by Dave Dwyer and Colin Chapman.

In Race two at the first leeward mark, Michael Duffy, Patrick Dillon and Tim Corcoran rounded with virtually nothing between them. Colin  Chapman, Garreth May and Andrew Gallagher were hot on their heels with David Dwyer just behind.

Race Two for Flight Three finished with Michael Duffy in first place, Tim Corcoran in second and Garrett May third.

Race Three was won by Colin Chapman, followed by Michael Duffy and Dave Dwyer.  It now looks like the three qualifiers for the final to-morrow are Tim Corcoran, Colin Chapman and Dave Dwyer.

Provisional results for Flight Three are:
