Dave Dwyer in Marinerscove.ie has added yet another accolade to his ever increasing collection of awards with the announcement by Afloat.i.e/Irish Independent of his nomination as Sailor of the Month for June with his convincing retention of the RORC British Open IRC Championship title. This feat was only ever achieved once before by Justin Slawson’s Big Cheese in 2001.
A busy month of sailing had already produced several worthy contenders for the Sailor of the Month title but Dwyer’s performance on the final weekend of the month with the 39ft Marinerscove.ie (designed in 2006 by current Sailor of the Year Mark Mills of Wicklow) was in a league of its own.
Mariners can truly be said to have the X factor and sails proudly with the words Royal Cork Yacht Club emblazoned on her transom.
Our three boats for the Commodores Cup now look as is they have come closer to getting it right for the competition in August after their performance at the British Championships. Mariners had her convincing win, Anthony O’Leary’s Ker 39 Antix had an excellent fourth placing and the Rob Davies Corby 36 Roxy 6 showed excellent potential and was only pipped for third position when Rocakall 111 pushed her into fourth place after an epic battle. They are certainly looking for possible success in August and in the meantime will be gathering momentum and showing their prowess as they compete at Cork Week July 10th to 16th and Cowes Week July 31st to August 7th before competing at the ultimate pinnacle the Commodores’ Cup August 14th to 21st.
