Currabinny Cup

Currabinny Cup Report

Not only did the Clipper sailors arrive in Cork last weekend (28/29 July 08) but also many 420 sailors travelled from around the country to be here for the first battle of the Currabinny Cup!  The Cup was presented by Lucille Bradfield who is the current president of the Irish 420 Class and there was great enthusiasm for the event from the sailors.   In all we had 15 boats competing to be the first name on the Cup.  Special thanks must go to Kevin Lane who was OOD as  he set great courses for the two day event.  Both days the conditions were challenging (Saturday up to 20 knots, Sunday up to 25 knots) but they were no problem for the sailors.  We had 3 good races each day and there was a hard fought battle for first place.  The first 3 boats were the same at the end of each day but the order changed before the final results were confirmed which made for an exciting contest.
In first place (Gold Fleet) was Tim O’Laoire (Howth YC) & Brian Kelleher(Royal St. George), second was Katie Tingle & Andrew O’Donoghue (RCYC), third Jack Costigan (RCYC) & Iarlaith Kennedy (KYC).  The Silver Fleet was won by Dermot McMurragh & Peter Gleeson (Royal St. George), second Killian O’Keeffe & Robbie English (RCYC), third Laura & Louise McCarthy (RCYC). It was very encouraging to see Royal Cork Yacht Club sailors featuring at the prize giving.

Many thanks to all who helped to make this event such a success.
