YES, YES. IT’S GOLD FOR PETER O’LEARY AND FRITHJOF KLEEN IN THE STAR CLASS IN THE SKANDIA SAIL FOR GOLD REGATTA AT WEYMOUTH
Finally the hard work and dedication has come to fruition. Going into Race Eleven, the Medal race today, O’Leary had a deficit of three points behind Frederik Loof and Johan Tillander of Sweden with today’s race counting for double points.
The big guns of the Star fleet had been put in the shade all week by the Irish team of Peter O’Leary and Frithjof Kleen. The Sydney 2000 Olympic Finn bronze medalist, Freddy Loof and his crew Johan Tillander (SWE) had just edged ahead of the Irish yesterday, but O’Leary and Kleen were not to be denied. They sailed a very collected race to come third, and with Loof and Tillander back in ninth, the Irish were golden. Poland’s Matuesz Kusznierewicz and Dominik Zycki went home with bronze, fending off the former Laser superstar, Brazil’s Robert Scheidt and his crew Bruno Prada.
Anyway ,it is the result we have all been hoping and dreaming about. Torben Grael and Marcelo Ferreira won today’s race, Robert Scheidt and Bruno Prado came second with O’Leary and Kleen in third place giving O’Leary a nett 52 points and Gold some nine points clear of Frederik Loof and Johan Tillander who received the Silver Medal and thirteen points clear of the Bronze medal winners, Mateusz Kusznierewicz and Dominik Zycki.
For O’Leary the celebration will have to be put on hold as he now moves to the crew of Antix, the Irish big boat in the Commodores’ Cup commencing tomorrow.
