60 Optimist sailors from all over Munster competed in the first day of the Cobbler League at the Royal Cork Yacht Club on Sunday 4th October. Peter McCann (RCYC) leads the main fleet from Daire Cournane (KYC) and John Durcan (RCYC) while in the regatta fleet James McCann leads from Rebecca O’Shaughnessy and Claire O’Sullivan (all RCYC). Full Results are available here.
Race officer Nick Walsh managed to run three good races in light and variable conditions on the Curlane Bank despite the strong tide. No wind at the scheduled noon start time meant a huge raft up on the committee boat, Adrielle. However, a fitful breeze soon filled in and racing was soon under way.
In the first race in the main fleet, Peter McCann had a substantial lead at the first mark which he maintained until the last leg, when Philip Brownlow (RCYC) took the correct option and headed south against the tide first and into the new breeze to take the race. Seafra Guilfoyle (RCYC) was a very close third. The second and third races were both won by Daire Cournane, from Peter McCann and Sean Gambier-Ross (KYC) in the second and Scott Levie (Lough Derg/KYC) and Peter McCann in the third and final race.
In the regatta fleet. James McCann won the first two races and scored 2nd in the last race to lead overall. Rebecca O’Shaughnessy had 4th, 2nd and a 1st to lie second overall. Claire O’Sullivan had a 3rd and two 4ths to like third overall.
Other notable main fleet results were Criofan Guilfoyle (RCYC) who leads the Junior Silver division in 14th place overall have had very consistent results (11th, 16th and 12th) in the shifty conditions.
