Summer like weather finally returned to Schull for the latter half of Calves Week. Wednesday dawned bright and sunny for the annual pilgrimage to Cape Clere Island where the crews had an opportunity to unwind at the fun regatta, following the tough conditions experienced over the previous few days.
On Thursday Race Officer, Neill Prendeville, split the fleets in two with classes Zero, One, Two and Three, sailing on a laid course south of Long Island, while Class Four and the two White Sail classes raced around the Calves Islands.
In Class Zero, honours were again shared between the Sydney design boats with Paul Harris in “Tanit winning IRC, while Morgan O’ Donovan in “Loco”, from the host club, took Echo.
In Class One the Parnell family sailed “Black Velvet” to victory in IRC ahead of Donal O’ Leary’s “D Tox”, with the positions reversed in Echo.
“Bad Company” continued their excellent run in Class Two, by chalking up another bullet in IRC, with Vinny O’ Shea’s “Yanks & Franks taking the Echo trophy.
In Class Three it was a clean sweep for Cove Sailing Club boats, with “Bedlam”
Winning IRC and “Targeteer ” first in Echo, with “Bambora” taking third place.
In Class Four The Murphy family in “Shelly D” continued another good showing by taking both the IRC and Echo trophies.
In the White Sail class Brian Siggins “Aris Maria” had a comprehensive victory in Class One, while David Madden’s “Treforty” took the prize in Class Two.
Schull/Fastnet/Crookhaven Friday
With the continuation of light weather, the decision was taken to send only Classes Zero, One and Two around the Fastnet Rock, with the remaining fleets racing directly to Crookhaven .
In Class Zero IRC “Tanit” once again notched up another win with Loco taking the Echo division, while the class one dominance of Simon Coveney’s “Wavetrain” continued with a victory in IRC and a third in Echo, with Donal O Leary’s “D Tox” second in both classes.
The Desmond/Ivers/ Deasy combination in “Bad Company” continued their fantastic series of results in Class Two, holding off Vinny O Shea in “Yanks & Franks for another IRC win, with the Dann/Murphy crew in “Val Kriss” taking the Echo prize.
The tight battle in Class Three continued with the Russell/Allister /Doyle crew in Bedlam winning the IRC division from Jimmy Nyhan’s “Outrigger”, with the results reversed in Echo, while Ted Buckley’s “Tete-A-Tete won the shortened Class Four race in Echo with the Murphy family in “Shelly D” winning in IRC.

Phil Smith’s “Just Jasmin” held off a strong challenge from Julian Dockeray’s “Flying Fish” to win White Sail One, while Arthur Cagneys “Pepsi” was successful in White Sail Two, ahead of Don Boadella’s “Ibis” and John Molloy’s “Killena”.
Schull Regatta Sunday
Light conditions forced the temporary postponement of racing on the final day of Calves Week, before Race Officer Neil Prenderville eventually started all fleets on a course taking in Goat Island and the Amelia Bouy.
The fickle southwesterly wind proved a handful for all competitors with the smaller boats taking over four and a half hours to complete the course.
In Class Zero Finn Lyden’s “Corrin”took the honours, while Morgan O Donovan’s “Loco” won the IRC division.
In Class One the light conditions suited Anthony O Learys “Antix Beag” who had wins in both divisions from “D Tox” and “Indulgence”, while Vinny O Shea finished a successful week in “Yanks & Franks” to take two firsts in Class Two from the Appleby family in “Cochise”.
The Class Three battle continued right to the wire with “Bedlam” taking the IRC trophy and “Outrigger” the Echo division, while Paul Murray’s “Full Pelt” filled the other places.
Class Four saw Simon Nelson’s “Witchcraft” take the Echo prize, while Michael Murphy in “Shelly D” notched up another IRC victory.
In the sports boat class a well crewed “Derelict” helmed by Mark O’ Reilly, took the 1720 trophy from Tom Murphy in “Marinerscove 1” and Denis Quinlan’s “Run Lola Run”.
In White Sail One Andrews Lane’s “Aisha” had sixteen seconds to spare over Sean O’ Riordan in “Y Dream”, with Bryan Heffernan’s “Aisling” filling third, while Shay Roche finished a successful campaign by sailing “Mischief” to victory in White Sail Two ahead of Colin Moorhead’s “Tranquiliser” and John Molloys “Killena”
In the overalls the Scottish visitor “Tanit” won both divisions in Class Zero, while “Wavetrain” captured Class One IRC, with “Indulgence” winning Echo.
In Class Two “Bad Company” completed a near perfect week by winning both the IRC overall and best boat of the regatta, with “Yanks & Franks” taking the Echo prize.
In Class Three “Bedlam” emerged as winner of both divisions, as did “Shelly D” in Class Four.
In White Sail one “Aisha” captured the honours, with“Mischief” winning Class Two.
“Shelly D won best local boat, while the Pearson Trophy was presented to Greg Coughlan.
