Ben O’Shaughnessy with Emer McMorrow-Moriarthy(TBSC) as crew win the 29er class at the Irish Sailing Youth Nationals, while Oisin Pierse wins the IODAI Trials.
In all, there was 31 sailors from the club competing at the event. Congratulations to Ben & Oisin, and well done to all our dinghy sailors, it was a great showing from the club.
The 4 day flagship event was action packed from day-1, with ILCA6, 420s, and 29ers racing on the youth course and the optimists racing on another. Moderate winds with rolling seas made for great sailing conditions. The day ended with RCYC well represented on the leaderboards across the classes .
Day-2 saw the start of the ILCA4 and Topper racing with 14 sailors representing the club with the total racing at the event now climbing to 202 sailors. Slacker winds made it an easier start for the lighter sailors, and many took great advantage of this from the gun.
Day-3 saw a heavy swell with strong winds producing very tough conditions soon after the launch. About 40 boats retired which resulted in tricky conditions at the slip for recovery. Racing continued with the conditions now favouring the stronger sailors, we saw alot of changes on the leaderboards.
Day-4, the final day, saw easing winds throughout the day with some classes getting a 3rd race in, while most finishing out the event on 2 races. Oisin in his optimist finished the event with a string of bullets, as did Ben & Emer in the 29er to ensure that both won out in their respective classes.
