Bella and Tom Morehead from RCYC triumph again in the RS Feva Leinster Championship

Bella and Tom Morehead triumph again in the RS Feva Leinster Championship as RCYC sailors take 1st, 2nd and 3rd places.

The Royal St.George Yacht Club and The National Yacht Club co hosted the Mitsubishi Youth Regatta on the 9th and 10th May in Dun Laoghaire as part of their preparation for the ISAF Youth Worlds to be held in 2012 at the Dublin venue. The RS Feva Leinster Championship was incorporated into the event. Over a hundred sailors competed with separate starts for each class in the six race series.

Tom and Bella take the honours

Saturday’s racing was held in the harbour after a postponement of two hours. Race officer Con Murphy set a tight course in the strong and blustery northwest winds. Richard Roberts and Paul Martin were continuing their good form from Schull when a broken mast, with asymmetric flying just after the gybe mark, in the first race put an end to their series. Bella and Tom Morehead were rewarded for flying their asymmetric with three first places, Conor Lyden and Peter Stokes recording two second places and a fourth place.

An 8 to 10 knot easterly breeze on Sunday allowed the course to be set in Scotsman’s bay to the south of Dun Laoghaire harbour. Conor Lyden and Peter Stokes recorded first in race four and race five, leaving the series to be decided on the last race with one discard allowed in the series. Ally Morehead and Grattan Roberts sailed an excellent race to take first place by a big margin, with Bella and Tom 3rd and Conor and Peter 4th.

The series was tied on points with first place overall going to Bella and Tom on a tie break over Conor and Peter. Ally and Grattan finished in third place overall.
