AUGUST 18 QINGDAO THROWS UP MORE SNAKES AND LADDERS

To-day, August 18th, Races Five, Six and Seven have been sailed in the Star Class.  The Laser Radial Class series is now complete for Ciara Peelo with 9 races sailed.

After yesterday’s stormy conditions, to-day saw lighter winds of 8 to 13kts.  It has been a disappointing and frustrating day for Peter O’Leary and Stephen Milne.  Unfortunately, in this game of snakes and ladders they appear to have landed on the snake’s head to-day.  In Race Five they were 6th at the first weather mark, 9th at the first leeward and were 12th at the finish line.  In Race Six they were 7th at the first weather mark and also 7th at the first leeward but touched the mark in the strong current and when they had completed their penalty, a nightmare scenario in a Star with  its rig complete with runners, dropped to 14th but pulled back a place on the final leg to fnish 13th.  In Race Seven they were 8th at the first weather mark, slipped to 14th and again pulled back a place to finish 13th.  They are currently lying in 14th place overall with one discard applied.  Race Eight is scheduled for to-morrow (19th) and Races Nine and Ten are scheduled for August 20th (Wed). They will need good results in these three races.  They are currently 8 points behind the 10th placed competitor. It is now a bit of an uphill battle for them, given the strength of the fleet, to get into the  ten competitor Medal Race scheduled for Thursday.  Overall at this point Sweden leads Britain with France third.

In the Laser Radial Class Ciara Peelo finished Race Seven in 25th place, Race Eight in 18th place and Race Nine in an an excellent 10th position leaving her 20th overall in the fleet.  This completes her olympic event.  The Medal Race for the top ten in this event is scheduled for to-morrow August 19th.
