Following the start of the race on Friday, conditions throughout the night and for most of Saturday were very much as forecast with the wind lightening and becoming fluky ranging from 8 to 16 knots and providing excellent experience for the crews on the Commodore’s Cup yachts. In fact Marinerscove.ie lost out when sailing into a windless area under Wicklow Head and retired at that point. However, speaking with Dave Dwyer after racing he said that it was nonethless a wonderful training opportunity with the constant almost hourly sail changes required with the fluky wind. Congratulations are also due to Kieran Twomey in Gloves Off and in particular Donal O’Leary in D-Tox, a family cruiser racer, for sticking with the Grand Prix yachts and finishing well in the fluctuating conditions. Well done to all.
