The Optimist Leinster Championships were held on 5/6 th September in Howth Yacht Club. An excellently run event with dry weather and light breeze with 5 races in all. Royal Cork Senior Sailor Cathal O’Regan won the Senior Fleet on count back because of a dominant display with 2 wins on the Sunday and was thus crowned Senior Optimist Leinster Champion 2015. Kate Darcy followed with a great 3rd being consistent and they were joined in the top 10 by Conor Horgan. This fleet had 25 sailors competing so it was great to see all up the front – well done to all.
Our Junior fleet also did the Royal Cork proud with a fantastic representation in the top 10 Junior results. We had 21 sailors in this fleet out of a total of 68. Aoife Byrne was the stand out sailor with 2 wins out of 3 races on the first day and had the luxury of discarding her last race a fifth! Doubtless she won the event winning and and is deserved Junior Optimist Leinster Champion 2015.
Aoife was followed closely by many of her Royal Cork team mates in the top 20… Rory O’Sullivan 3rd, Harry Twomey 4th, Michael Crosbie 7th,,Jonathan O’Shaughnessy 8th, ,Conor Walsh 11th, Killian O’Regan 15th, Ben O’Hare 16th and Patrick Bruen 17th (2nd Junior Silver), Harry Pritchard (5th Junior Silver), Eoin Horgan, Jamie Venner, Cillian Foster, Adam Power, Conor Aherne, Justin Lucas, Ciara Burns, Charlie Neville, Lucy Bateman, Simon Pritchard and Max Coveney all did the Royal Cork very proud in the Junior Fleet at the weekend. For some of these sailors this was their first main fleet event and they were not in the least overawed.
Well done to our Regatta Sailors, Alana Twomey, Daniel Burns and Emmet Lucas for competing in this event.
