A huge congratulations to the Jones Family and all of the crew aboard JellyBaby who claimed a wonderful victory in the UK Sailmakers Ireland SCORA Kinsale Fastnet Race. The race was sailed based on Cat 3 rules for offshore sailing and all crews were competitive. It what was a very challenging race which provided competitors with significant breeze and tide issues. It was a race that required constant focus with little sleep had for the crews. It was wonderful to see Brian Jones guide his J109 home on a corrected time of 21 hours:13 minutes: 26 seconds winning from the Kinsale Yacht Clubs Artful Dodger a sister J109 by 11mins and 4 seconds.
Given the slack breeze, a shortened course was implemented with the Kowloon Bridge buoy that marks the position of a wrecked ship is just off Toe Head on the West Cork coast being the turning mark. This gave boats a stronger chance of completing the challenging course back to Kinsale in the forecasted light wind within the time limit.
The boats started on a tight reach before popping spinnakers as they reached Kinsale’s harbour mouth. Brian Jones and crew sailed a superb tactical race to win in a hugely competitive fleet which included RCYCs Nieulargo KYC Vallfreya and the Nationals Yacht Clubs Justtina to name but a few.
Well done to all Brain Jones and the crew aboard Jellybaby. A great victory for the Royal Corks J109 in a really tough competitive race.
