A sun-drenched Saturday last saw the conclusion of the April May League for our fleet. A total of 26 Mainfleet and 5 Copper fleet sailors went out and sailed 2 full races at Corkbeg in a lovely 8-12 kt Southerly breeze. A change of scene perhaps but a little preparation in the tide for the Connaughts at Foynes in 2 weeks time. The racing was good with all sailors enjoying themselves.
Michael Crosbie (cementing overall 1st Gold fleet) and Cathal O Regan won the races with Harry Twomey most consistent with 2 2nd places. Cillian Foster had a solid series with 2nd overall in Gold followed closely by Jonathan O Shaughnessy in 3rd Gold. In Silver was 1st Jamie Venner, 2nd Patrick Bruen and 3rd Kate Horgan then in Bronze 1st Anna Keal, 2nd Eva Spillane and 3rd Alana Twomey. The girls are back lads- watch out! In Copper 1st was Daniel Burns 2nd Charlie Venner and 3rd Ben O Shaughnessy.
A special presentation was made to Alfonso Moreno who is moving back to his native Spain soon. Our thanks to parents and volunteers who as always take the time to look after our sailors on the water.
A presentation was also made to our 6 sailors who made a National IODAI team this summer; these include Worlds- Cathal O Regan and Rory O Sullivan; Europeans Harry Twomey and Michael Crosbie and IDT in France Justin Lucas and Killian O Regan
On behalf of our Rear Admiral Dinghies we invite all our sailors to partake in the inaugural Coolmore to Club race this Friday and a BBQ afterwards at the Club. Please see all details for this on the club site but briefing is down for 4.40 with launch at 4.45. We need to get as far up the river as possible so don’t be late! Parents are welcome to sail with their sailors if you have a two handed boat!
Sailing continues this Saturday with the start of the June Saturday League with the June Tuesday League commencing on the 7th.
A special mention for the Royal Cork Family Fun Day on Sunday 5th June from noon to 5pm- if you are about there are various activities including on the water activity on Omegas, on display in Carpark – Oppie Laser Topper Mirror then Rig an Oppie competition, Knot board demo and competition re fastest knots, Crab fishing from 1-3 pm (ideal preparation for the At Home!) and of course the playground is always available. Volunteers to help are always welcome.
Back on the water there is club coaching this Sunday and Monday for the Oppies with our RCYC Skilled for Gold starting next Tuesday. This is a program which has run successfully for many years now to boost our sailors expertise. It is led by Thomas Chaix who along with Dara O Shea are coaching our sailors across not just Oppies but also Toppers and Lasers. This culminates in a club regatta on Friday the 24th June.
See you all Friday!
