Kinsale Yacht Club was host last weekend to the first leg of the 2011 Irish Optimist Dinghy trials where over fifty of the top oppi sailors in Ireland were invited to compete for a place on an Irish team.
Some fifteen invitees attended from the Royal Cork and ensured a strong representation for the club where the sailors varied in ‘race age’ from twelve to fifteen. The schedule of eight races was completed over three days in mainly light airs that at times were challenging and tricky.
While act two has yet to take place over the up coming May weekend (2nd leg of the trials to be hosted by the Royal St George YC with a concluding eight races scheduled), there have been notable performances by some of our senior fleet sailors.
Sophie Browne, Harry Whitaker, Eoin Lyden and Peter McCann hold four of the top five positions and make up the chasing pack behind Sean Donnelly of the National yacht club who has shown very good consistency to date.
…..and for the record, the following make up the list of all fifteen Royal Cork invitees
Charley Breen
Claire O Sullivan
Jil McGinley
Rebecca O Shaughnessy
Sophie Browne
Meave O Sullivan
Eva Donworth
Anna Kelly
Eoin Lyden
Adam D’Arcy
Douglas Elmes
Harry Whitaker
Daire Cournane
Peter McCann
Ronan Cournane
Good luck to all sailors over the May weekend where it is still all to play for with regard to overall finishing positions.
