July is often the quietest month for our fleet apart from December and January and the local fleet has enjoyed a somewhat brief respite with Cork Week taking centre stage but we are nearly back to normal!
We had seven of our sailors away recently with Atlee Kohl, Cathal O’Regan and Rory O’Sullivan at the Worlds and performing creditably; Michael Crosbie and Harry Twomey at the Europeans also doing well, but our star turn was Justin Lucas who, with Killian O Regan (also in Gold Fleet), won the ‘long race’ finishing 1st of 400 boats and finishing 5th overall at the French Nationals. Well done to all.
We have a large representation going to Largs to the UK Nationals starting this weekend including six of the eleven strong National U12 squad comprising Justin, Michael, Jonathan O’Shaughnessy, Richard McSweeney, Eoin Horgan and Patrick Bruen. We have a good contingent of other club sailors going and for many it is their first real ‘foreign’ event (Brexit of sorts!) so good luck to all.
Coaching has started again alongside the successful Club Sailing courses and of course league racing continues on Tuesdays and Saturdays as always. Shortly after their return from Scotland it is off to Lough Derg to the Irish Nationals in mid August so its all go.
On behalf of the sailors and their parents may we wish our heartfelt sympathies to Enda’s family. To echo words already written here, she will be missed not least by our young sailors who she always minded quietly and without fuss.
