Next Summer from July 12th to July 17th the Committee of the Glandore Habour Yacht Club would like to invite you and your boat to come and join us for the
10th GLANDORE CLASSIC REGATTA
The inaugural Glandore Classic Boat Regatta was held on a long week-end in July 1992. The combination of a new venue – Glandore Harbour’s natural amphitheatre – the warm welcome and the growing interest in traditional boats, contributed to its success. The Regatta attracted a fleet of local and visiting traditional and classic boats including the Galway Hookers, Paddy Barry’s “St. Patrick” and Michael Brogan’s “MacDuach”. A number of features of the first regatta, including the Parade of Sail, have lasted to the present day. The regatta was repeated biannually in 1994, 1996 and 1998.
Following the millennium the 2001 regatta was re-titled Glandore Classic Regatta. While the Traditional and West Cork Mackeral Yawls and Lobster boats have formed the backbone of the event; the regatta also attracted a sparkling fleet of classic yachts. Also at this time one-designs and classic day-boats began to participate. Initially the Water Wags arrived showcasing formation sailing under the baton of Hal Sisk. In following regattas the first of the Heir Island Sloops and the recently re-instated Cork Harbour One-Design boats participated. The Fastnet Race for the bigger boats was added to the programme in 2001.
For later Glandore Classic Regattas in 2003, 2005, 2007 and 2009 the Castletownshend ETTE class have raced. There was an en-masse arrival of the Howth 17’s in 2003. In 2005 the regatta fleets were augmented by the spectacular fleet of Conway Fife one-designs and Shannon One-Designs who all enjoyed four days of glorious fleet racing. The Irish Classic Dragon Championship is now also a feature of the regatta sailing programme.
The Glandore Classic Regatta has developed since 1992 into an outstanding event where the masterpieces of the great age of sail mingle with traditional West Cork workboats for a regatta of sailing and spectacle. The parade of sail and the closing fireworks display are now a must-see on the sailing calendar.
Glandore Classic Regatta 2011 promises to be a great event once again. We are writing to you at this time to cordially invite you to participate in the event and to mark the dates in your calendar now. We promise a thoroughly enjoyable regatta and a great Glandore event.
