The West Awakes… RCYC Sailors impress in Galway.

All roads headed west this weekend for the 1st Regional event on the 2014 Oppy calendar as the Connaught Championships were held at Galway Bay Sailing Club.

RCYC members travelled in numbers with a huge 32 Sailors competing in Regatta, Junior and Senior fleets. It was fantastic to see RCYC sailors making up a third of the entire fleet. Saturday was a huge test with challenging conditions while Sunday was an ideal day for Optimist sailing.

Once again RCYC sailors came out tops. Harry Durcan won the event overall so congratulations and well done to Harry.

James Spillane won Senior Silver with Kate D’Arcy in 2ndplace and Emily Whittaker in 4th.

Aoife Byrne had a fantastic event finishing 6th Junior Gold and 6th overall in the Junior Fleet.

Georgia Coveney and Conor Aherne were on the podium in the Junior Silver Fleet taking a 4th and 5th respectively.

The future is safe with Johnathon O’Shaughnessy who took the honours in the Regatta Fleet. Well done Johnathon!

Congratulations to all who got in the prizes at the event.

For many of our Junior Sailors this was their first or second regional event and with challenging conditions on Saturday in particular all of our sailors deserve congratulations for battling through!  Adam Power, Ben O’Hare, Ellie Cunnane, Harry Twomey, Oisin MacSweeney, Cillian Foster, James Hassett, Eoin Horgan, Rory O’Sullivan, Mia Murphy, Conor Horgan and Killian O’Regan all deserve credit.

Newcomers to the Regatta fleet and stars of the future are Max Coveney, Eva Spillane, Michael Crosbie and Charlie Neville.

Senior Sailors Sophie Crosbie, Paddy Cunnane, Jennifer O’Shaughnessy, Juliet Nyhan, Caoimhe Foster, Cathal O’Regan, Sarah Cudmore and James McCann all put in strong performances.

Next stop are the Ulster Championships being held this year in Skerries on the 14th and 15th June.
