The Optimist Ulster Championships were held last weekend at Skerries Sailing Club. Once again the RCYC class travelled in numbers with nearly 30 Sailors competing.
While beautiful sunshine dominated on day 1, unfortunately there was no wind and despite the best efforts of the PRO racing was abandoned with no races being held on the first day. An early start on day 2 meant that 3 races were squeezed in before the breeze died and the series was complete.
The event was won by Grace O’Beirne of the Royal St. George with our own James McCann in second place. Tom Keal was in 4th place and Cathal O’Regan finished in 6th. Hot on their tails were Harry Durcan, Patrick Daly and Christopher Bateman.
In the Senior Silver Paddy Cunnane had a 3rd overall and Juliet Nyhan did very well with a 6th.
Rob Keal had a fantastic 3rd in Junior Gold and Harry Twomey showed that the future is safe with a superb 2rd place in Junior Silver and a 10th overall in the Junior Fleet. Killian O’Regan had a great event with an 8th overall.
Michael Crosbie led the charge for the RCYC Sailors in the Regatta fleet and finished in 7th. Anna Keal topped off a great weekend for the Keal family with an 11th and well done to our other Regatta Sailors, Lucy Bateman and Max Coveney for competing so well in this event.
Once again, well done to all our Sailors who competed in a very challenging competition in very light airs. Next up are the Leinster Championships on the 5th and 6th of July. Our own League racing continues this Saturday followed by the BBQ. Looking forward to seeing you all there!
Thanks to Denis Murphy for towing the Club trailer to Skerries and back and to Paul Keal for once again providing us with some amazing photos.
