Remarkable Sportsmanship at the Carnival Regatta, Vilamoura, Portugal

A report from Thomas Chaix, coach to the the Irish Team at the the 40th Carnival Regatta, Vilamoura, Portugal:

Day 3 Villamoura: Special update. Cathal O’Regan made me aware of a rare situation that needs to be highlighted. In the finale crazy windy race, Cathal pitch-balled on the run and got detached from his boat. A Portuguese sailor going back upwind (who was inside the top 10) saw he could not swim back to the drifting boat and changed heading to pick up Cathal in his own Optimist to drop him back to the drifting Optimist. In the process the Portuguese sailor picked up a lot of water and lost further ground… This was a great gesture of seamanship and sportsmanship we rarely see and that I never witnessed in the Optimist… Congratulations to that sailor ( unfortunately Cathal could not remember the sail number). Well done, this young Sailor is a credit to his Sport.
