Last Friday 5 RCYC Optimist Sailors, Patrick Daly, Cathal O’Regan, Caoimhe Foster, Kate D’Arcy and Emily Whittaker were part of a Team of 10 Sailors from around Ireland which flew to Portugal to participate in the 40th Carnival Regatta held in the Clube International da Marina de Vilamoura in Vilamoura, Portugal. The Team was accompanied by Coach Thomas Chaix and Anna Donnla O’Hagan. For some of our Sailors this was their first international event.
While temperatures were a balmy 19C, Day one’s conditions proved challenging with big waves, winds at 20 knots, gusting 30 with Caoimhe setting the Pace for the Irish Sailors. The Conditions on day 2 were as challenging, the wind dropped to 15 knots gusting 20 but the high waves proved difficult for the Cork Sailors, Cathal and Emily scoring their best results of the event. Day 3 saw Patrick and Kate having their best day in 20 knots, gusting 30, the high waves again a challenge. This proved to be a wonderful event for big breeze (and seas!) training. However, this was not purely about Sailing, there was plenty of fun to be had along the way too. Congratulations and Well Done to all our Sailors!
